Burrp: Social recommendation site

If new in a city you often have to rely on friends, acquaintances, yellow pages or tourist guide for suggestion on restaurants for lunch or dinner. Now there is a better choice in the form of a social site - Burrp.

So what is Burrp? The site describes itself as an online platform where you can search and review local businesses, such as restaurants, bars, nightlife, juice centres, paan shops, bakeries, etc. Basically it is a social networking site which uses "wisdom of crowd" to provide users reviews and recommendations about different recreational establishments in India cities.

In true Web 2.0 style it provides a social networking platform wherein users can share opinions and recommendations, rate and blog about these places in their city. Currently Mumbai and Bangalore editions are online; according to the site other editions - Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Goa will also be available soon.

Establishments that you can currently talk about in the site includes restaurants, bars and clubs, cafes, lounges and desserts. The site provides important details about these establishments, for example it provides address, phone, location, food type etc. of restaurants. And if you want to carry the details of your favorite restaurant while you are traveling or send details to your friend the site allows free SMS.

Given below is a screen shot of a restaurant (
Little Italy, Indiranagar, Bangalore) as provided in the site.

BurrpWhy burrp is more useful then off-line resources like newspaper, travel guides? Well, the comments available are supposedly from people who have actually visited these places. Details are more live and comes from multiple sources. It provides photos and and you can do tagged search. Besides it helps you to connect to like minded people.

A few features that will add more value to users:
  • Display a location map of establishments with road details. With Google Map now providing road data for major Indian cities this is a possibility. For people new to a city this will be useful feature.
  • Feature to upload audio, video file.

Brijesh, thanks so much for your mention of burrp on your awesome blog. I think you hit on some very relevant points, such as maps, which a good portion of our users have also requested.

We are simply awaiting the time when there is a mapping product that will allow some flexibility in being able to do many thing instead of just pointing out where a particular business is located or where a particular event is happening.

Look for us to go live soon with a brand new community interaction platform, information on local events, as well as expanding out into new categories. I invite your readers to provide us their candid feedback. We listen to our users :)
